The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
